WUCIUS WONG

Wucius Wong, born 1936 is a leading exponent of modern ink painting from Hong Kong, and has brought significant attention to the region’s efforts in contemporary art.

Born in Guangzhou, Wong moved to Hong Kong the year after. In 1955 he began studying art under Lui Shou-kwan – the hugely influential and prominent ink painter. During the 1960’s he left Hong Kong for the United States to further his practice, culminating in works that employ a range of influences from Bauhaus to Song dynasty landscapes, from Turner to the Baroque.

As with many of the new ink generation artists though, he has found fertile ground for experimentation yet remained connected to traditional Chinese visual culture, refusing to entirely abandon his relationship to the past. This has allowed to Wong to develop works that are never “purely Chinese or purely Western”, works that take influence from but are never completely absorbed by Western culture.
